Charles Harris - Owner and Art Director

Charles began his creative career at WGRZ in Buffalo, gaining network television experience in everything from floor direction to studio camera and chyron. If you were in Buffalo in the late ’80s, you saw his work on the 6 and 10 p.m. news and late night’s “Randi’s Pajama Party.” He counts Jay Leno, Larry “Bud” Melman, the Fat Boys and Bills QB Frank Reich among the many celebrities he met during his “Pajama Party” days.

After moving back to the mid-Hudson, he freelanced with studios in NYC, working on documentaries, commercials and “Peter and the Wolf” narrated by James Earl Jones.

After returning to Middletown, NY, Charles jumped to print media, learning design and production the old way: by  pasting up the Times Herald-Record, Middletown, NY. (Yes, he remembers wax and X-ACTO knives). He has worked in print since 1987 and Web development since 1994.  He was the first webmaster of recordonline back when no one knew what the World Wide Web was.

After leaving the Record, he was the webmaster for Frontier Insurance Group Inc. in Rock Hill and then start-up technology firm Business Layers in Rochelle Park, NJ. He then became art director at Winebow in Montvale, where he developed an appreciation of Italian wines. Deciding to totally change course, he moved to Lonza US, a Swiss life sciences company in Allendale, NJ. It was a Lonza that he was able to study Swiss design not only in New Jersey but also at company headquarters in Basel, Switzerland. During his time at Lonza, he was able to hone his design skills and formulate his desire to create his own company.

His influences include Peter Saville, The Bauhaus and Jan Tschichold. He is able to tell what font any piece of collateral is written in.

He has a degree in digital video production from SUNY Buffalo and has taken classes at SVA in Manhattan.

Karen Harris - Writer and Editor

Karen is a former editor at the Times Herald-Record in Middletown, NY. During her 21 years at the paper, she was an original editor on GO Healthy and then created GO Home, where she wrote the weekly column Karen Loves. Copies of her column can still be seen around the Hudson Valley. She “discovered” Claudia Jacobs of Claudia’s Corner interior design column and Dan Daly of Ask Dan gardening column.

After leaving the Record, Karen was on the original team that launched Orange Magazine. Her work there led to her being approached by another start-up, Aspire magazine. She became the editorial director for the publication, which is a real estate and design magazine geared to agents with $1 million-plus listings. She also has written for Shawn Elliot Luxury, a real estate magazine on Long Island’s North Shore.

Karen was honored with several awards during her time at the Record:

  • Action Toward Independence Community Service Award for support of persons with disabilities, 2004
  • New York State Assembly Certificate of Merit, 2004
  • New York State Associated Press Association Newspaper of Distinction, 2002
  • New York State Associated Press award in spot news design for The Times Herald-Record’s coverage of the 25th anniversary of Woodstock, 1995.

She believes that everything should be spelled correctly and checked for grammar and will boycott restaurants that fail in either.

She has a degree in journalism from SUNY Plattsburgh and has taken marketing classes at NYU.
